Former Cabinet Secretary and National Security Advisor to give evidence on UK constitution

Tomorrow the House of Lords Constitution Committee will be quizzing Lord Sedwill, former Cabinet Secretary and National Security Advisor as part of its inquiry into executive oversight and responsibility for the UK constitution.

The session will take place at 10:15am on Wednesday 4 December 2024 and can be followed live on Parliament TV.      

Topics the committee is likely cover include:     

  • The role of the Cabinet Secretary, and the Civil Service more broadly, in safeguarding the constitution and advising on constitutional reform 
  • The consideration of constitutional issues during the policy and decision-making process 
  • Any occasions in which a policy/decision was pursued despite advice that it could have substantial constitutional implications 

Whether long-term strategic thinking about the constitution takes place in government.
