Michael Gove and Charles Clarke to appear before Lords Committee
Monday 16 December 2024
Tomorrow the House of Lords Justice and Home Affairs Committee is holding its third evidence session as part of its inquiry on prison governance, leadership and staffing.
The Committee will cover a range of topics, including lessons learnt from previous reforms, the impacts of moving departmental responsibility for prisons from the Home Office to the restructured Ministry of Justice, and the role of the private sector in running prisons.
The session will take place on Tuesday 17 December 2024 at 10:30am and can be followed live on Parliament TV.
Giving evidence will be:
- Rt. Hon. Charles Clarke, former Home Secretary and former Minister of State for Prisons, Parole and Probation.
- Rt. Hon. Michael Gove, former Justice Secretary and Lord Chancellor.
Questions the committee is likely to ask include:
- What is the purpose of prisons?
- How has the media’s coverage of prisons shaped the debate?
- Given the dramatic increase in our prison population, is a rehabilitative approach still feasible?
- What makes a good prison governor, and how should their performance be assessed?
- What reforms would the witnesses seek to make with prisons now?
