Lords Committee hears from local authorities on support available for young disabled people transitioning from education to employment

On Wednesday 7 February, the House of Lords Public Services Committee will hear from senior local authority representatives in an evidence session that will explore the types of support they are required to provide to young disabled people moving from education into employment.
The session will also examine how effectively local authorities can meet these duties, what good practice has been developed to deliver good outcomes for young disabled people during this transition and the effectiveness of Government support.
The session will start at 3.00pm and can be watched live or on demand at Parliament TV or in person in Committee Room 3, Palace of Westminster.
Giving evidence will be:

- Suzanne Davis, SEND Strategy Lead: Preparing for Adulthood, Essex County Council;
- Jane Taylor, Head of Employment, Skills and Learning, Bristol City Council; and
- Martin Tett, Chair of the People and Places Board, Local Government Association.
Questions will include:
- What statutory obligations do local authorities have with regard to supporting young disabled people in their transition from education to employment?
- To what extent are local authorities able to effectively support transitions from education to work for young disabled people? What difficulties can local authorities face in supporting young disabled people during this transition?
- What is local government’s role in ensuring different stakeholders are linked up and working in partnership?
- How is information shared with young disabled people and their families during this transition? How could this be improved?
- What could central government do that would support your work in this area?
