Monday 29 January 2024

On Wednesday 31 January, the House of Lords Public Services Committee will hear from Special Educational and Needs and Disabilities (SEND) Further Education (FE) providers on how they provide careers support and education to young disabled people. The session will also consider the FE sector’s perspective on the Government’s SEND and alternate provision (AP) plan.

The session will start at 3.00pm and can be watched live or on demand at Parliament TV or in person in Committee Room 4, Palace of Westminster.

Giving evidence will be:

3.00pm

  • David Holloway, Senior Policy Manager, SEND, Association of Colleges;
  • Gary Hyndman, Sense College Loughborough Principal at Sense Colleges; and
  • Ellen Atkinson, Regional Adviser, South and South East, National Development Team for Inclusion (NDTI).

Questions will include:

  • To what extent is employability a key focus for post-16 education courses for young disabled people? Is this appropriate for all groups?

    • What are the main barriers to delivering high quality courses which lead to employment for young disabled people?

    • How far does the SEND and AP plan address the challenges young disabled people face during the transition from education to work?

    • What impact have recent changes to the curriculum and assessment processes had on young disabled people, and how might changes affect their transition into work?
