Lords Committee to explore the education support available for young disabled people in schools and colleges
Tuesday 9 January 2024
Tomorrow, Wednesday 10 January, the House of Lords Public Services Committee will hold an evidence session to examine the role of schools in preparing young disabled people for the workplace. The Committee will consider the provision of support, careers advice and guidance, and access to work experience.
The session will also consider the difficulties for education leaders in providing such support, and in linking with other public services, such as employment support offered by local authorities and the Department for Work and Pensions (DWP).
The session will start at 3.00pm and can be watched live or on demand at Parliament TV or in person in Committee Room 4, Palace of Westminster.
Giving evidence will be:
- Dr Nicola Crossley, SEND Representative, Association for School and College Leaders;
- Dr Anne Murdoch OBE, Senior Adviser, College Leadership, Association for School and College Leaders; and
- Peter Monaghan, Head of SEND and High Needs and Curriculum Foundation Learning, Education Partnership North East.
Questions will include:
- What are the barriers young disabled people face when moving from education to employment, and how can schools and colleges support young disabled people during this transition?
- What barriers do young disabled people face in accessing careers advice in education? What barriers do schools and colleges face in delivering it?
- How linked up are careers services in schools with other kinds of employment or career support? What difficulties are there in doing so?
- What are the barriers to arranging and accessing quality work placements for young disabled people in education? How could these be addressed?
- What policy interventions do you recommend?
