High streets inquiry: how can retailers adapt to changing consumer preferences?
Monday 4 March 2024
At 10.45am on Tuesday 5 March 2024, the House of Lords Built Environment Committee, as part of its inquiry on high streets in towns and small cities, will be hearing evidence from:
- Michael Weedon, Policy Champion for place-based economy, local government and retail, Federation of Small Businesses (FSB)
- Laura Onita, Retail Correspondent, Financial Times.
- Representative from the National Association of British Market Authorities (NABMA)
This session, which is open to the public, will be held in Committee Room 3 of the House of Lords and streamed live and on demand on Parliament TV.
The purpose of this session is to understand the perspective of retailers and market traders on the high street. The committee will explore:
- what is making it difficult for retailers to enter, or remain on, the high street and how they can respond to changing consumer preferences;
- whether there is a role for government in supporting markets and retailers to thrive.
The Built Environment Committee’s ‘High streets in towns and small cities’ inquiry is exploring how high streets can be regenerated and become more resilient and attractive. The inquiry will consider the different uses of high streets by various communities and businesses and what is essential for them to flourish economically and socially.
This inquiry has its own web page. The committee’s work can be followed on its website and via X (Twitter).
Last week the committee published a call for evidence.
