Lords committee hears evidence on drone warfare in Ukraine
Monday 11 March 2024
As part of its new, short inquiry considering the implications of the war in Ukraine for UK Defence, the House of Lords International Relations and Defence Committee will hold an evidence session on Wednesday 13 March on the use of drones in the war in Ukraine.
The session will start at 11:30am and will be available to watch live or on demand at Parliament TV, or attend in person in Committee Room 4, Palace of Westminster.
Giving evidence will be:
- Dr Ulrike Franke, Senior Policy Fellow, European Council on Foreign Relations and;
- James Black, Assistant Director, Defence and Security, RAND Europe.
Questions will include:
- Small drones have become ubiquitous in the war in Ukraine. What role have small reconnaissance and kamikaze drones played in the war? How has their use evolved?
- How have Russia and Ukraine made use of long-range kamikaze drones for strategic strikes behind the front lines?
- What has been the impact of Ukraine’s use of underwater drones to target Russia’s Black Sea Fleet?
- The proliferation of drones and other sensors has made it far harder for land forces to remain hidden and concentrate mass. What are the lessons for Western land forces for future operations?
- What are the possible next steps for the development of drone technology (for example, increased use of AI, greater moves towards autonomy, or the adoption of automated swarming tactics); and is the UK adequately preparing for these?
