Leading international figures in engineering biology to appear before Lords Committee
Friday 17 May 2024
On Tuesday May 21, the Lords Science and Technology Committee will take evidence from leading international industry figures as part of its ongoing inquiry into engineering biology.
Among them are Dr Peter Williams, Group Technology Director at INEOS, and Fiona Mischel, Director of International Outreach at SynBioBeta.
The committee is looking at the kind of support start-ups or scale-ups receive from Government that encourage them to grow - and the major barriers to success. Peers want to explore what the landscape looks like internationally for engineering biology, and how it compares to the UK, and how larger corporations abroad are utilising engineering biology to best, and widest, effect.
The Government defines engineering biology as the design, scaling and commercialisation of biology-derived products and services that can transform sectors or produce existing products more sustainably.
The first evidence session at 10.15am will include three witnesses in total:
- Greg Archer, Director of European Policy, LanzaTech
- Charles Hall, Head of Research, Peel Hunt
- Dr Williams, Group Technology Director, INEOS
At 11:30am, the committee, chaired by Baroness Brown, will hear from:
- Dr Mary Maxon, Executive Director of BioFutures, Schmidt Sciences
- Fiona Mischel, Director of International Outreach, SynBioBeta
- Dr Hendrik Waegeman, Head of Business Operations at Bio Base Europe Pilot Plant
The evidence sessions will be available to watch live or on demand on Parliament TV or in person in Committee Room 2, Palace of Westminster.
The committee’s findings will inform a report which makes recommendations to the Government and key organisations in the autumn.
