Lords Committee to quiz Ofcom Chief Executive on its regulation of the news

Friday 10 May 2024

The House of Lords Communications Committee will next week take evidence from Dame Melanie Dawes, Chief Executive Officer at Ofcom and Cristina Nicolotti Squires, Ofcom’s Group Director of Broadcasting and Media.

The session forms part of the Committee’s inquiry into the future of the news, which is looking at the role of impartiality, declining public trust and technological developments on news providers.

The evidence session will start 2:30pm on Tuesday 14 May in Committee Room 2, Palace of Westminster.

Issues the session will cover include:

  • Ofcom’s role in responding to the influence that tech platforms have on access to the news, and its impact on media plurality.
  • What Ofcom is doing to ensure that the implementation of the Online Safety Act does not lead to legitimate opinions being stifled.
  • Whether Ofcom has got the balance right in regulating the impartiality of news outlets, and whether Ofcom’s regulation of due impartiality is being carried out effectively and consistently
  • How well the BBC and other Public Service Broadcasters are serving their audiences in terms of access to high quality, impartial news services.
