Lords high streets inquiry to hear evidence from Sunderland City Council and Frome Town Council
Friday 3 May 2024
At 10.45am on Tuesday 7 May 2024, the House of Lords Built Environment Committee, as part of its inquiry on high streets in towns and small cities, will be hearing evidence from:
- Peter Wheelhouse, Economic Development & Regeneration Manager and Deputy Town Clerk, Frome Town Council.
At 11.30am the committee will hear from:
- Patrick Melia, Chief Executive, Sunderland City Council.
These sessions, which are open to the public, will be held in Committee Room 3 of the House of Lords and streamed live and on demand on Parliament TV.
The purpose of these sessions is to understand the experience of local governments in regenerating high streets through two case studies. Topics that will be covered will include:
- The role of local leadership in improving high streets.
- How increasing the mix of uses on the high street can boost footfall.
- The challenges faced in obtaining funding for high street regeneration.
- The balance between access for cars and pedestrians in town centres.
- Funding through programmes such as Heritage Action Zones.
The Built Environment Committee’s ‘High streets in towns and small cities’ inquiry is exploring how high streets can be regenerated and become more resilient and attractive. The inquiry will consider the different uses of high streets by various communities and businesses and what is essential for them to flourish economically and socially.
This inquiry has its own web page. The committee’s work can be followed on its website and via X (Twitter).
