Lords Preterm Birth Committee hears from medical research experts and NICE

The House of Lords Preterm Birth Committee continues its inquiry by hearing from medical research experts and the National Institute for Health and Care Excellence (NICE).
The session can be followed live or afterwards on Parliament TV or in person in Committee Room 3, Palace of Westminster on Monday 20 May from 3pm.
Giving evidence on research funding from 3pm will be:
- Dr Jessica Boname, Interim Head of Population and Systems Medicine, Medical Research Council
- Louise Wren, Director of External Affairs, Association of Medical Research Charities
Possible questions include:
- How many funding applications for research relating to pregnancy and neonatology, and preterm birth specifically, have you received in recent years?
- What are the barriers to conducting more research in these areas, and what steps are you taking to address these?
- How can public bodies and charities collaborate with industry to advance research and drug development relating to preterm birth and pregnancy?
Giving evidence from NICE from 3.45pm will be:
- Professor Jonathan Benger, Chief Medical Officer and Interim Director of the Centre for Guidelines, NICE;
- Dr Clare Morgan, Director of Implementation and Partnerships, NICE.
Possible questions include:
- How can variation in the implementation of NICE guidelines relating to preterm birth be reduced?
- How does NICE ensure their guidelines on preterm birth reflect the latest evidence?
- How does NICE ensure its guidelines relating to preterm birth are consistent with those produced by other bodies?
