Minister for Victims and Safeguarding to give evidence on Modern Slavery

Friday 17 May 2024

On Monday, the House of Lords Modern Slavery Act 2015 Committee will hear evidence from the Home Office, as part of its inquiry into the Act.

Giving evidence will be:

  • Laura Farris MP, Minister for Victims and Safeguarding
  • Matthew Bligh, Deputy Director for Enforcement and Criminality Policy
  • Rebecca Wyse, Joint Director for Tackling Abuse and Exploitation

Questions the committee is likely to ask include:

  • How is the Government structured to ensure that modern slavery policy incorporates a full range of perspectives?
  • The Government has used recent immigration legislation to amend the modern slavery system. Why has it done this and will it continue to do so?
  • The Independent Anti-Slavery Commissioner provides important oversight of modern slavery policy. How does the government ensure that the Commissioner can perform the role fully and independently?
  • There has been substantial recent exploitation in the care sector. Why has this happened and what can be done about it?
  • There is a low prosecution rate for modern slavery offences. What is the Government doing to improve this?

The session will take place on Monday 20 May 2024 at 3:35pm and can be followed live on Parliament TV.
