Shoplifting inquiry launched by Lords committee

Monday 20 May 2024

Tomorrow the House of Lords Justice and Home Affairs Committee will be quizzing the police on shoplifting. The session is the first of the committee’s short inquiry into the matter.

Giving evidence will be:

Questions the committee is likely to ask include:

  • What are the challenges for the police in responding to shoplifting? How does it affect public confidence in the police?
  • What is the background to the Retail Crime Action Plan and how does the Pegasus Project sit within it?
  • How were the partners to Pegasus chosen and persuaded to contribute funding?
  • How are databases being built up about the relationship between organised crime and shoplifting? How is Pegasus taking a different approach from before?
  • What is the role of retrospective facial recognition technology?

The session will take place on Tuesday 21 May at 10:30am and can be followed live on Parliament TV.
