Monday 25 November 2024

On Wednesday 27 November, the House of Lords Public Services Committee will hold an evidence session with senior academics who specialise in Artificial Intelligence (AI) translation and interpreting services, and the use of technology in court. The session will seek to understand the opportunities and risks of technological innovation in the provision of these services.

The session will start at 12.00pm and can be watched live or on demand at Parliament TV or in person in Committee Room 2, Palace of Westminster.

Giving evidence will be:

  • Professor Sabine Braun, Professor of Translation Studies, University of Surrey;
  • Daniela Ford, Senior Teaching Fellow in Translation, University College London; and
  • Professor Richard Susskind OBE KC (Hon)

Questions will include:

  • How effectively is remote interpreting currently utilised in court settings? What are the barriers to effective implementation?
  • What are the possibilities of introducing AI tools into interpreting and translation services in the courts? What steps would need to be taken to begin this process?
  • How will the use of AI tools and remote interpreting affect the role of interpreters and translators?
  • How might quality assurance for AI tools work, particularly in a court setting?
  • What recommendations should the Committee make to the Government?
