Tuesday 19 November 2024
The House of Lords Constitution Committee will tomorrow be quizzing the Chancellor of the Duchy of Lancaster and the Paymaster General as it continues its inquiry into executive oversight and responsibility for the UK constitution.
The session will take place at 10:15am on Wednesday 20 November 2024 and can be followed live on Parliament TV.
Giving evidence will be:

- Rt Hon Nick Thomas Symonds MP, Paymaster General and Minister for the Cabinet Office (Minister for the Constitution and European Union Relations)
- Darren Tierney, Director General, Propriety and Constitution Group
Questions the committee is likely to ask include:
In your ministerial role, what are your constitutional responsibilities?
- Who in government, at both ministerial and official level, is responsible for safeguarding the constitution?
- Is the diffusion of constitutional responsibilities across government an effective governance model?
- Should there be a single minister responsible for oversight of all constitutional matters within government?
- Are constitutional issues considered during the policy and decision-making process? If so, how?
- Is there sufficient constitutional knowledge within government, both at ministerial and official level?
- Is there any value in putting some principles in legislation to guide executive decision-making on constitutional issues?
- What are the executive oversight arrangements for the Council of the Nations and Regions?
How does the Council fit into your overall approach to intergovernmental relations?
