Experts to give evidence on prison culture

Monday 25 November 2024

Tomorrow the House of Lords Justice and Home Affairs Committee will be quizzing experts as it continues its new inquiry into prison culture: governance, leadership and staffing.

The session will take place on Tuesday 26 November 2024 at 10:30am and can be followed live on Parliament TV.

Giving evidence will be:

  • Gen Glaister, Author, The Prison Officer
  • Natasha Porter OBE, CEO, Unlocked Graduates
  • Pia Sinha, CEO, Prison Reform Trust

Questions the committee is likely to ask include:

  • What is the role of a prison officer and what are the qualities of a good prison officer?
  • Is the current approach to centralised recruitment working?
  • In what ways are prison officers currently trained and equipped to deal with all aspects of their roles, what continuous training is offered and how does it relate to career progression?
  • How should prison officers and leaders be assessed in their work, and what would an effective performance system look like?
  • What is the role of a prison governor and how has it changed in recent years?
  • How has the management structure in prisons changed in recent years and, specifically, what ongoing support is given to those at the level of Custodial Manager (middle-ranking managers)?
  • What is the role of third sector organisations and how can they contribute to innovation within HMPPS?
