Michael Gove to give evidence on UK constitution
Wednesday 27 November 2024
Tomorrow the House of Lords Constitution Committee will be quizzing Michael Gove, Editor of The Spectator and former Secretary of State for Levelling Up, Housing and Communities and Minister for Intergovernmental Relations, as it continues its inquiry into executive oversight and responsibility for the UK constitution.
The session will take place at 10:15am on Thursday 28 November 2024 and can be followed live on Parliament TV.
Questions the committee is likely to ask include:
- What were his constitutional responsibilities in your most recent ministerial role as Secretary of State for Levelling Up, Housing and Communities and Minister for Intergovernmental Relations?
- Who in government, at both ministerial and official level, is responsible for safeguarding the constitution?
- In his time as a minister, what were the mechanisms, both formal and informal, through which ministers engaged with each other about constitutional matters?
- During his time as a minister, were constitutional issues considered during the policy and decision-making process? If so, how?
- Would he say that long-term strategic thinking about the constitution takes place in government? If so, where?
- In your his opinion, how well has the constitution been managed during times of stress?
- In your his view, is the Council of the Nations and Regions a helpful addition to the intergovernmental relations structure?
