HM Courts and Tribunal Service and Ministry of Justice Officials to give evidence on delivering Interpreting and Translation Services in Courts
Tuesday 29 October 2024
Tomorrow, Wednesday 30 October, senior officials from Her Majesty’s Court and Tribunal Service (HMCTS) and the Ministry of Justice (MoJ) will appear before the House of Lords Public Services Committee. The session will examine how the current system of delivering interpreting and translation services in court operates and how the Department is seeking to address current issues with the system. The Committee will also hear about the roles of different bodies, data collection and publication and future quality assurance plans.
The session will start at 11.00am and can be watched live or on demand at Parliament TV or in person in Committee Room 2, Palace of Westminster.
Giving evidence will be:
- Mark Stewart, Courts and Tribunals Director, MoJ;
- Julie Howkins, Deputy Director, Commercial for HMCTS, MoJ; and
- Kris Hamson, Deputy Director, Intelligent Client Capability & Contract Services Division, MoJ.
Questions will include:
- How are translation and interpretation services delivered in courts and what is your role in delivering those services?
- What data do the MoJ gather and publish on the performance and quality of ITS services in the courts?
- How do you ensure there is a sufficient number of interpreters and translators who can work to the standard required for the courts?
- How do the quality assurance and complaints processes in ITS work? Does this allow the full range of people who have bad experiences of ITS services in the courts to raise concerns.
