Institute for Government to give evidence on UK constitution

Tuesday 29 October 2024

Tomorrow the House of Lords Constitution Committee will be holding its first evidence session for its new inquiry into executive oversight and responsibility for the UK constitution.

Giving evidence will be:

  • Alex Thomas, Programme Director at the Institute for Government

Questions the committee is likely to ask include:

  • Where does responsibility lie in government for safeguarding the constitution? Is this a shared responsibility?
  • What are the governance and decision-making processes for matters of constitutional interest?
  • How significant a role does consideration of the constitution play in the development of policy and/or legislation?
  • How, and where, does strategic thinking about the constitution take place?
  • Is there a case for strengthening the role of the Minister for the Constitution so that they have strategic oversight for all constitutional matters in government?
  • What are the executive oversight arrangements for the Council of the Nations and Regions?

The session will take place at 10:15am on Wednesday 30 October 2024 and can be followed live on Parliament TV.
