Lords committee hears about the ecological impacts of nitrogen

The House of Lords Environment and Climate Change Committee continues its inquiry into the efficient use and management of reactive nitrogen by hearing about the ecological impacts of nitrogen pollution on soil, biodiversity and water.
The session will start at 10am in Committee Room 4, Palace of Westminster and can be followed live or afterwards on Parliament TV.
Giving evidence will be:
- Professor Jeremy Biggs, CEO, Freshwater Habitats Trust;
- Dr Alexander Lees, Reader in Biodiversity, Manchester Metropolitan University;
- Dr Ed Rowe, Senior Biogeochemical Modeller, UK Centre for Ecology and Hydrology.
Members are expected to ask questions on the following topics:
- impacts of nitrogen pollution on plants and terrestrial habitats;
- the role of soil health;
- impacts of nitrogen on aquatic habitats, including eutrophication;
- geographic variation in impacts;
- co-benefits for biodiversity and habitat restoration goals;
- sufficiency of current Government schemes and approaches.
