Lords European Affairs Committee to quiz former Government officials as part of its inquiry into the UK-EU reset
Monday 3 February 2025
The House of Lords Committee on European Affairs will question former Government officials at a meeting to take place on Tuesday 4 February 2025 at 4pm in Committee Room 3.
Those attending to give evidence are:
- Philip Rycroft, former Permanent Secretary at the Department for Exiting the EU (DExEU)
- Shanker Singham, Chairman and CEO, Competere Ltd; and former advisor to the Department of International Trade
- Anton Spisak, Associate Fellow, Centre for European Reform; and former Cabinet Office and FCDO official
Topics which may be raised include:
- Whether the Government should have red lines for the reset
- How success in any UK-EU reset will be measured
- How the Government can link a UK-EU reset with its own growth and international policy objectives
- The domestic management of the reset process, including machinery-of- government issues, relations with the devolved administrations and whether lessons can be learned from the UK’s previous negotiations with the EU and other partners
- Mechanisms by which the Government can influence the EU and its Member States most effectively
The session, in the Houses of Parliament, is the third one held as part of the inquiry, and can be watched live or later on Parliament TV.
The Lords European Affairs Committee has issued a call for evidence for the inquiry which comes after the Government announced it was seeking a reset of the UK’s relations with the European Union, including in the areas of security and defence co-operation, in order to “address common threats and challenges”; and trade, in order to “break down barriers”.
Interested individuals and organisations are invited to submit written evidence to the inquiry by 7 March 2025, and the Committee, chaired by Lord Ricketts, aims to report to the House later in the year.
