Trade union representatives to give evidence on prisons

Tomorrow the House of Lords Justice and Home Affairs Committee is holding its fourth and fifth evidence sessions as part of its inquiry on prison governance, leadership and staffing.

Giving evidence from 10:30am – 11:20am will be:

  • Mark Fairhurst, National Chair, Prison Officers’ Association

Giving evidence from 11:30am – 12:15pm will be:

  • Gavin Miller, National Secretary for Justice and Custodial at Community Trade Union.

Questions the committee is likely to ask during the sessions include:

  • How has the role of the prison officer changed in recent years and what is the impact of current pressures on the prison service?
  • What are the reasons for retention problems in HMPPS?
  • What are the advantages and disadvantages of the civil service structure of HMPPS?
  • Do union members have confidence in the current appraisal system, and do they experience interactions with management as positive or negative?
  • What are the issues raised by union members working in privately-run prisons?
  • What issues do union members report that are specific to working in the women’s estate?

The sessions will take place on Tuesday 14 January 2025 from 10:30am and can be followed live on Parliament TV.
