Former British ambassador to Russia to give evidence to Lords Inernational Relations Committee
Two former British ambassadors to Russia, a senior fellow from LSE, and a lecturer from King's College London will appear before the House of Lords International Relations Committee on Wednesday 25 April as part of its inquiry 'UK Foreign Policy in Changed World Conditions'.
The session will focus on the role of Russia in international relations.
The inquiry was launched in January 2018 to examine the changing face of international relations and foreign policy, and to assess the UK's strategy and capability to adapt to these changes.
Appearing at 10.40am will be:
- Sir Tony Brenton KCMG, Former British Ambassador to Russia (2004-2008)
- Sir Andrew Wood GCMG, Former British Ambassador to Russia (1995-2000)
Questions will include:
- Are we living through a new Cold War? What does this mean for Russia's approach to international affairs and for the UK's response?
- To what extent is contemporary Russian foreign policy driven by rapid technological change and new Russian technical capabilities?
- Does Whitehall have the understanding and capability to engage with Russia effectively?
Appearing at 11.40am will be:
- Ms Oksana Antonenko, Visiting Senior Fellow, Institute of Global Affairs, London School of Economics
- Dr Natasha Kuhrt, Lecturer, Department of War Studies, King's College London
Questions will include:
- To what extent has Russian thinking changed from the pursuit of a Greater Europe to a Greater Asia?
- To what extent are Russia's foreign policy and disruptive role in international relations driven by its economic decline?
- How does Russia view the role of the UK in Euro-Atlantic and global affairs?
The evidence session will take place in Committee Room 2.
