Lords International Relations Comittee to question NATO and FCO ahead of NATO Summit


James Appathurai from NATO, and Angus Lapsley from the Foreign and Commonwealth Office will appear before the House of Lords International Relations Committee on Wednesday 18 April ahead of the NATO Summit in July.

The session will focus on cyber warfare, Russia's ‘disruptive actions', defence spending, and preparations for the NATO Summit in July. The Committee expects to publish a short report in May.

Appearing at 10.40am will be:

  • James Appathurai, Deputy Assistant Secretary General for Political Affairs, NATO

Appearing at 11.40am will be:

  • Angus Lapsley, Director, Defence, International Security and Southeast Europe, Foreign and Commonwealth Office

Questions will include:

  • What are the Government's priorities for the Summit in July?
  • Has NATO's response to Russia's disruptive actions in recent years been sufficient? Are there further steps the UK would wish to see NATO taking?
  • What assessment has the Government made of the US' commitment to NATO following the meeting of NATO leaders in 2017?
  • How well equipped is NATO to respond to the rapidly changing challenges of cyber and hybrid warfare?

The evidence session will take place in Committee Room 4.
