Lords to question CBI, TUC and City of London Corporation on UK-EU relations post Brexit

The House of Lords EU Committee will question representatives from the CBI, the City of London Corporation and the TUC on Tuesday 24 April as part of its inquiry examining post-Brexit UK-EU relations.

The session will explore what the organisations' priorities are for a future relationship with the EU and the level of involvement they have had in developing the UK's approach post-Brexit.

The witnesses will also be asked to identify whether there are any significant areas of disagreement, inconsistency or difference in emphasis in the approaches to future UK-EU relations set out in the Prime Minister's Mansion House speech, the March 2018 European Council guidelines, and in the European Parliament's March 2018 resolution.

The session will start at 16:00 on Tuesday 24 April in Committee Room 4A of the House of Lords. The representatives giving evidence will be:

  • Carolyn Fairbairn, Director-General, CBI
  • Catherine McGuinness, Policy Chairman, City of London Corporation
  • Frances O'Grady, General Secretary, TUC

Questions the Committee are likely to ask include:

  • What model is the most likely outcome of negotiations on the future UK-EU relationship, in particular in terms of the future UK-EU trade relationship?
  • What are the likely economic consequences, both for businesses and workers, of the change in the UK-EU relationship post-Brexit?
  • What issues will remain to be resolved after the UK leaves the EU on 29 March 2019?
  • What discussions have the organisations had with counterparts in the EU 27, and what evidence is there that its views are being taken into account by the negotiators on both sides?
