Energy Secretary to face Lords Economic Affairs Committee questions
On Tuesday 20 February 2018 Greg Clark MP, Secretary of State for Business, Energy and Industrial Strategy, and Claire Perry MP, Minister of State for Energy and Clean Growth, will be giving evidence to the House of Lords Economic Affairs Committee.
They will be joined by Jeremy Pocklington, Acting Director General, Energy Transformation.
Questions the Committee is likely to ask them at 3.35pm include:
- In 2013, the Government expected 16 gigawatts of new nuclear power by 2030. Will this target be met?
- The cost of offshore wind has gone down. Should the Government rethink its plans for the UK's energy mix?
- The Government's formal case for supporting nuclear power is 10-years old. Should it be reviewed?
- The nuclear industry has asked the Government to evaluate how government involvement could reduce the cost of capital in new nuclear projects. Will the Government consider different financing models in the future to that used for Hinkley Point C?
- Was Professor Helm's review right to conclude that “the cost of energy is significantly higher than it needs to be to meet the government's objectives.”?
- How is the Government progressing with its plan to introduce a cap on electricity and gas bills?
The Committee may also ask about productivity and the industrial strategy.
This evidence session will start at 3.35pm on Tuesday 20 February 2018 in Committee Room 1 of the House of Lords.
In 2016-17 the Committee carried out an inquiry into the economics of the UK's energy policy. It published its report, The Price of Power: Reforming the Electricity Market, in February 2017.
