Lords EU committee to question Norwegian and Swiss customs officials on their EU border arrangements

The House of Lords EU Committee will tomorrow take evidence from customs officials from Norway and Switzerland as part of its inquiry into the impact of Brexit on UK/Irish relations.

The Committee will ask the officials about their arrangements for cross-border movements of people and goods with EU Member States and the logistics that are required to keep trade functioning. Question will also focus on how the UK's border arrangements, particularly at the border between Northern Ireland and the Republic of Ireland, will need to change as result of the UK's decision to leave the single market and the customs union.

The session will also examine the extent to which new technologies can minimise the disruptive impact of new border controls between EU and non-EU countries.

The session will start at 15:05 on Tuesday 6 February in Committee Room 3 of the House of Lords. The officials giving evidence will be:

  • Mr Pål Hellesylt, Director for Customs and Trade Facilitation, Directorate of Norwegian Customs
  • Mrs. Hanne Solgaard Andersen, Head of Customs Procedures Department at Customs Region East – Norway
  • Christian Bock, Director General, Swiss Federal Department of Finance, Federal Customs Administration
  • Lt Col Rebekka Strässle, Chief of Staff, Swiss Border Guard, Swiss Customs Administration, Federal Department of Finance
