Lords EU Committee to take evidence on EU missions in Kosovo and Somalia
On Thursday 22 February 2018 the House of Lords EU External Affairs Sub-Committee will take oral evidence on the EU Rule of Law Mission in Kosovo (EULEX) and EU missions in Somalia.
The Committee will take evidence from:
- Dr Filip Ejdus, Assistant Professor, Faculty of Political Sciences, University of Belgrade
- Dr An Jacobs, Senior Lecturer, Defence & International Affairs Department, Royal Military Academy Sandhurst.
This public evidence session starts at 10.05am and is part of the Committee's Brexit: Common Security and Defence Policy (CSDP) missions inquiry.
The questions the Committee is likely to ask include:
- Could the objectives of EULEX Kosovo be achieved through other means?
- How significant has the UK's contribution to EULEX been?
- Five non-EU countries currently contribute to EULEX Kosovo—Canada, Norway, Switzerland, Turkey, and the US. Which contribution has been the most significant? What is your assessment of their co-operation?
- What contribution has EU Training Mission (EUTM) Somalia made to the EU's objectives in Somalia? What are the main challenges of the mission?
- The Committee has been told that EU Capacity Building Mission (EUCAP) Somalia was “probably the least convincing of the three missions” operating in and around Somalia. Is this assessment correct?
- What contribution has EUTM Somalia made to the EU's objectives in Somalia? What are the principal challenges of the mission?
- After Brexit should the UK try to continue participating in EU CSDP missions in Kosovo and Somalia?
