UK foreign policy and Trump's US foreign policy under the spotlight in Lords committee evidence session
Former Foreign Office Permanent Under Secretary Lord Ricketts, Head of the US and the Americas Programme Chatham House Ms Xenia Wickett, and Deputy Director General of the International Institute for Strategic Studies Dr Kori Schake, will appear before the House of Lords International Relations Committee on Wednesday 6 February as part of its inquiry UK Foreign Policy in Changed World Conditions.
The inquiry was launched in January 2018 to examine the changing face of international relations and foreign policy, and assess the UK's place and capability to adapt to these changes.
Appearing at 10.30am, Lord Ricketts, Former Permanent Under Secretary and Head of Diplomatic Service (2006-2010), Foreign and Commonwealth Office, will be asked questions including:
- Other than Brexit, what are the most important developments in global affairs to which UK foreign policy must adapt?
- How well equipped is Whitehall and the UK's diplomatic network to operate effectively in the changed world conditions?
- What effect will China's ambitions to play a more significant global role have on international relations?
Appearing at 11.30am, Ms Xenia Wickett, Head, US and Americas Programme, Chatham House, and Dr Kori Schake, Deputy Director General, International Institute for Strategic Studies, will be asked questions including:
- How clear is US foreign policy under the Trump Administration, and what do you perceive to be its primary objectives?
- What does President Trump's emphasis on national sovereignty mean for the US's approach to multilateral institutions and the rules-based international order?
- The Strategic Studies Institute has spoken on the US entering a post-primacy world. What affect is this likely to have on US foreign policy?
The session will take place from 10.30am in Committee Room 4.
