Former Deputy Supreme Allied Commander Europe to give evidence to Lords EU Committee

On Thursday 25 January 2018 as part of its Brexit: Common Security and Defence Policy (CSDP) missions inquiry the House of Lords EU External Affairs Sub-Committee will be holding two evidence sessions.

At 10.05am the Committee will hear from:

  • Dr Nicholas Wright, Teaching Fellow in EU Politics, University College London
  • Professor Anand Menon, Professor of European Politics and Foreign Affairs, King's College London.

The questions the Committee is likely to ask this panel include:

  • The Director of Defence and International Security at the Foreign and Commonwealth Office told the Committee that the UK's principal contribution to CSDP missions has been intellectual and strategic leadership. Do you agree?
  • How relevant to UK-EU co-operation after Brexit are precedents of co-operation between other countries and organisations, such as Finland and Sweden's relations with NATO?
  • The Government has outlined its ambition for the UK to “work with the EU during mandate development and detailed operational planning” of CSDP missions. This would be an unprecedented role for a third country. Can this ambition be achieved?
  • Should CSDP missions be part of a transitional arrangement between the UK and the EU?

At 11am the Committee will heard from:

  • General Sir Adrian Bradshaw, former Deputy Supreme Allied Commander Europe (DSACEUR).

The questions the Committee is likely to ask General Bradshaw include:

  • How effective has the EU's military mission in Bosnia and Herzegovina, EUFOR Althea, been to date in achieving its objectives and fulfilling its mandate?
  • How significant has the UK's contribution to EUFOR Althea been, in comparison to that of other EU Member States?
  • EUFOR Althea is the only mission that used the ‘Berlin Plus' arrangements for co-ordination between NATO and the EU. How well has that worked for the mission?
  • The UK has traditionally held the position of Deputy Supreme Allied Commander Europe (DSACEUR). How important is this role to the UK and will it be able to continue holding this role?

These public evidence sessions will begin at 10.05am on Thursday 25 January 2018 in Committee Room 1 of the House of Lords.
