China's foreign policy and UK military capabilities: Lords International Relations Committee to take evidence
The House of Lords International Relations Committee will continue taking evidence on Wednesday 11 July for its inquiry UK Foreign Policy in Changed World Conditions.
The Committee's inquiry was launched in January 2018 to examine the changing face of international relations and foreign policy, and to assess the UK's strategy and capability to adapt to these changes.
The first session with former diplomat and academic Professor Jean-Christophe von Pfetten, and Stephen Perry, Chairman of the 48 Group Club and Managing Director of London Export Corporation, will start at 10:40am. Questions are likely to include:
- To what extent has China's foreign policy changed under President Xi Jinping?
- How has China responded to recent developments in US foreign policy?
- To what extent does China now rival the West in terms of technology?
- How should the UK be developing its relationship with China?
The second session with former NATO Deputy Supreme Allied Commander Europe, Sir Adrian Bradshaw, will start at 11:40am.Questions are likely to include:
- Should the UK remain a ‘tier one' military power?
- To what extent have new technologies allowed countries militarily weaker than the UK to challenge its security?
- What are the future defence challenges the UK will face? How can the UK best prepare for them?
- To what extent does NATO remain the bedrock of UK defence and security?
The evidence session will take place in Committee Room 4.
