Does Brexit mean the end of UK involvement in EU Galileo satellite system?
The House of Lords EU Internal Market Sub-Committee will continue to hear from experts in the UK Space Industry at an evidence session on Thursday 12 July, to investigate the expected impact of Brexit on the UK Space Industry.
The discussion will focus on the UK's participation in EU space programmes, in particular the UK's involvement in Galileo, the European Union's Global Satellite Navigation System.
Giving evidence at 1pm on Thursday 12 July will be:
- Sam Gyimah MP, Minister of State for Universities, Science, Research and Innovation, BEIS/DfE
- Rebecca Evernden, Director, International, UK Space Agency
Questions are likely to include:
- It has been decided that UK companies will be excluded from the latest procurement batch for Galileo. Is the UK seeking to overturn this specific decision?
- What involvement does the UK have or intend to have in the research and development of the next generation of Galileo?
- What assessment has the Government made of the number of UK jobs that depend on full UK access to Galileo, including research and development, the ground segment and the space segment?
- The Government's technical note on Galileo participation states that the UK is exploring the option of a domestic system. How developed are the feasibility assessments on this? Will the results be made public?
The session will start at 1pm on Thursday 12 July in Committee Room 4A of the House of Lords.
