What will Brexit mean for animal testing in the UK? Lords to ask Minister
The EU Energy and Environment Sub-Committee will question Minister Thérèse Coffey MP on what Brexit means for the regulation of chemicals in the UK on Wednesday 18 July.
It is currently unclear to what extent the UK will remain involved in the EU's regime for regulating chemicals (REACH) after leaving the EU. The Committee will explore the Government's intentions for chemical regulation post-Brexit, and seek the Minister's response to the issues raised by witnesses in the Sub-Committee's REACH roundtable on 27 June.
During this session, the Committee heard concerning evidence that if the UK leaves REACH, and in a circumstance where it cannot access the safety information that is owned by EU companies, there is a possibility that we would have to re-conduct those animal tests in order to ensure the same safety standards in a UK system.
The Committee hope to address this issue with the Minister, as well as other topics including:
- The transfer of REACH into UK law
- What associate membership of REACH would look like
- The steps being taken to prepare an independent chemicals regulation regime
- What impact withdrawing from REACH would have on animal testing
The session will begin at 10.30am in Committee Room 2 of the House of Lords.
