House of Lords Administration commits to tackling gender pay gap

The House of Lords Administration has today published its gender pay gap figures and committed to urgently addressing the imbalance caused by a lack of women in the most senior roles.

Mean and median gender gaps in hourly pay:

Mean pay gap
13.7%

Median pay gap
5.5%

While the mean gender pay gap for staff in grades outside the senior grades, who make up the vast majority of staff, is less than 1%, the disparity in the overall gender pay gap is caused by a lack of women in the senior grades in the Administration. The House of Lords Administration is committed to addressing this imbalance.

Our figures show that the main reason for the overall gender pay gap is due to the underrepresentation of women in the senior grades in the House of Lords Administration. Although across the whole of the House of Lords Administration gender distribution is balanced (51% men and 49% women), in the senior grades, the gender distribution is significantly unbalanced, with 78.1% of senior-grade staff being men and 21.9% women.

The House of Lords Administration's commitment to creating an equal, inclusive and diverse workforce is currently being delivered through actions set out in our Diversity and Inclusion Action Plan 2017-2019. Placing 23rd in the Inclusive Top 50 UK Employers List, offering talent management opportunities for our staff and our senior leaders participating in inclusive leadership training have been positive steps so far and we have further committed to investigating the barriers that women face in progressing to the highest levels of the organisation and increasing the opportunities for them to be able to do so.

Clerk of the Parliaments Ed Ollard said:

“The House of Lords Administration is committed to tackling the gender pay gap at all levels. That the gender pay gap for the majority of staff is less than 1% is encouraging, but not good enough. We are determined to address the imbalance at the senior levels, and will be consulting on how best to do this both internally and externally. We will report on the actions to be taken by the end
