Ministers to face Lords Economics Committee questions on the future of student loans and apprenticeships
How fair is the current student loans system? How adequate is the maintenance support available to students? Is FE education's poor relation? How biased towards university applications is the careers advice and information provided to pupils?
These are some of the questions the House of Lords Economic Affairs Committee will be asking the Rt Hon Anne Milton MP, Minister of State for Apprenticeships and Skills, and Sam Gyimah MP, Minister of State for Universities, Science, Research and Innovation, at 3.35pm on Tuesday 13 March 2018.
Other topics the Committee is likely to cover in this public evidence session include:
- Whether the current way student loans are repaid penalises middle earners.
- Value of setting targets for higher education and apprenticeships.
- The impact of the apprenticeship levy and the decline in apprenticeships since it was introduced.
- The use of the apprenticeship levy to fund training for existing employees, rather than creating new apprenticeships.
- Part-time and lifelong learning, including how people can be trained in skills needed in a future labour market.
This evidence session will start at 3.35pm on Tuesday 13 March 2018 in Committee Room 1 of the House of Lords. It is part of the Committee's ongoing inquiry into the economics of higher, further and technical education.
The transcript from the inquiry's previous evidence sessions on Tuesday 27 February 2017 is available here.
