Lord Chancellor to appear before Lords Constitution Committee
he House of Lords Constitution Committee will question David Gauke MP, Lord Chancellor and Secretary of State for Justice, on Wednesday 9 May.
The session will focus on the role of the Lord Chancellor, constitutional issues within government, criticism aimed at judges, judicial appointments, access to justice and legal aid, among other topics.
The session will start at 10.00am in House of Lords Committee Room 1.
Questions are likely to include:
- What distinctions do you see between your roles as Lord Chancellor and Secretary of State for Justice?
- What do you see as your responsibilities in respect of the constitution? What role do you play in the discussion of wider constitutional issues within government?
- Following the criticism of judges following the Miller case last year, what steps would you take if the judiciary were to suffer such personal attacks in future?
- What steps are you taking to encourage more solicitors, government lawyers and others to become judges?
- What steps are you taking to improve the efficiency of the justice system to reduce the costs associated with delays and the impact it has on the people involved?
- What concerns do you have about recent high-profile failures in criminal cases related to evidence disclosure? What steps will the Government take to ensure the justice system works effectively in this regard?
