Lords to hear evidence from leading engineering companies and consultancy firms on off-site construction
The House of Lords Science and Technology Committee will take evidence for its inquiry investigating 'Off-site Manufacture for Construction' on Tuesday 8 May. The Committee will hear from Laing O'Rourke, Severfield, NG Bailey as well as architects and engineering consultancy firms.
The witnesses will give their views on what barriers there are to the wider uptake of off-site manufacture and whether standardisation and factory manufacture can be realised without hampering architectural ambition.
At 3.30pm the Committee will question:
- Andrew Morris, Partner, Rogers Stirk Harbour
- Jane Richards, Director, Building structures, WSP UK
- Jaimie Johnston, Director, Bryden Wood
At 4.30pm the Committee will hear from:
- Dr Sarah Williamson, Technical Director, Laing O'Rourke
- Martin Kelly, Strategic Business Development Director, Severfield
- David Hurcomb, Chief Executive, NG Bailey
Questions the Committee are likely to ask include:
- What actions are needed from the Government and from the construction sector to help increase the use of off-site manufacture?
- What R&D is needed, and by whom, to realise fully the potential benefits of off-site manufacture and to evidence those benefits?
- Do business models in the construction industry need to change in order for off-site manufacture to become more widely used?
The evidence session will begin at 3.30pm in Committee Room 4A of the House of Lords.
