Lords to question former MI5 director on post-Brexit security

The House of Lords EU Home Affairs Sub-Committee will hold two evidence sessions for its inquiry Brexit: the proposed UK-EU security treaty.

On Tuesday 15 May at 11:00am in Committee Room 4A of the House of Lords the Committee will question Nick Hurd MP, Minister of State for Policing and the Fire Service. The Committee will ask the Minister questions including:

  • Why does the Government feel that a security treaty would be the best model for ongoing police and judicial cooperation between the UK and EU?
  • Given the depth and extent of the UK's security relationship with the EU, could a treaty adequately cover all necessary areas?
  • Does the Minister expect to reach an adequacy decision on data protection with the EU before it agrees a security treaty?

On Wednesday 16 May at 10:30am the Committee will question:

  • Lord Evans of Weardale, Former Director-General of MI5
  • Robert Hannigan, Chairman, BlueVoyant Europe, and former Director of GCHQ

At 11:30 the Committee will question:

  • Ms Debbie Price, Head of International Justice, Crown Prosecution Service
  • Mr Jim Brisbane CBE,International Assurance Officer and SRO for EU Exit, Crown Prosecution Service:

Questions they are likely to ask include:

  • What is the extent to which national security agencies such as MI5 and GCHQ rely on and/or engage with EU-based instruments and agencies for security cooperation?
  • Will the UK lose any of the influence that it currently wields in security cooperation once it is no longer part of the EU?
  • Should the UK focus on EU-wide or bilateral relations in the area of security cooperation after Brexit? If the Government did focus on bilateral relations, which countries should it prioritise and why?
  • Will changes to the UK-EU security relationship affect security cooperation between Northern Ireland and the Republic of Ireland?
