Lords to question legal experts on UK-EU security treaty

The House of Lords EU Home Affairs Sub-Committee will continue to take evidence for its inquiry 'Brexit: the proposed UK-EU security treaty' on Wednesday 9 May.

Appearing at 10.30am will be:

  • Mr Tim Devlin, Criminal Bar Association Executive Member, Criminal Bar Association / Bar Council
  • Dr Anna Bradshaw, Member of the Law Society's EU Committee and Partner, Peters and Peters

Questions are likely to include:

  • How many cases have involved the European Arrest Warrant (EAW), but also other EU instruments on mutual recognition and exchange of police information, since the various EU instruments for police and judicial cooperation were introduced?
  • To what extent, if at all, have the EU instruments brought "added value" in comparison to the laws that they replaced?
  • Do the witnesses have a view on the proposals that outline what should happen to pending mutual recognition or exchange of information requests at the end of the transition period?
  • Similarly, do the witnesses have a view about what should happen to existing EAWs on Brexit day, where a Member State says that it will refuse to surrender own nationals to the UK?

The evidence session will begin at 10:30am in Committee Room 3 of the House of Lords.
