Lords Seaside Towns Regen Committee to take evidence from leading architects and engineers

On Tuesday 27 November 2018 the House of Lords Regenerating Seaside Towns Committee will be taking evidence from two panels of witnesses. The first panel will focus on design and engineering projects, while the second focuses on health.

At 3.20pm the Committee will hear from dRMM architects, designers of the Stirling Prize-winning Hastings Pier, as well as Gary Young, a Partner at Farrells, and Andy Murdoch, Cities Director at Buro Happold Engineering.

Questions the Committee is likely to ask these witnesses include:

  • What challenges do developments on the seafront and in seaside towns face?
  • How should local communities be involved in design and development projects?
  • How can spending on coastal defences deliver better value for money?
  • Which national policies prevent or hinder regeneration projects?

At 4pm the Committee will hear from Karen Tyrell, Executive Director of External Affairs at Addaction, and Sam Crowe, Acting Director of Public Health at Public Health Dorset.

Questions the Committee is likely to ask these witnesses include:

  • What challenge does the higher proportion of older and vulnerable people living in seaside towns and communities pose for healthcare services?
  • Are issues of drug and alcohol dependency more pronounced in coastal areas and, if so, why?
  • Do seaside town struggle to recruit and retain healthcare staff due to their peripherality, and higher levels of deprivation?
  • What kind of interventions are required to address issues related to mental health in coastal communities?

These evidence sessions, which are open to the public, will begin at 3.20pm on Tuesday 27 November 2018 in Committee Room 2A of the House of Lords.
