Size of the House, diversity, attendance: Lords Constitution Committee to question outgoing chair of the House of Lords Commission

The House of Lords Constitution Committee will hold its annual session with the former chair of the House of Lords Commission Lord Kakkar on Wednesday 28 November.

The session will focus on the size of the House and proposals for reform, diversity of members of the House, the nominations process and the operation of the Commission itself.

Speaking to the Committee at 11.15am Lord Kakkar will be asked questions including:

  • What is your view of the targets to reduce the membership of the Lords set out in the report of the Lord Speaker's Committee on the Size of the House and the progress to date?
  • Are expectations of appointments for senior posts problematic for reaching the targets set by the Lord Speaker's Committee?
  • What have you been able to do to increase diversity among members of the House of Lords in your role as chair?
  • What can the Commission do to encourage nominations from underrepresented sectors?
  • Is the Commission sufficiently resourced and empowered to vet nominees for their propriety?
  • Should new appointees by required to commit themselves to a certain level of attendance in the House or involvement in House activities prior to appointment?

The session will be held in Committee Room 1 of the House of Lords.
