Emily Thornberry to give evidence to Lords International Relations Committee
How should the UK deal with the increasing political influence of China, and the US Administration's approach to foreign policy? How well is the UK equipped to deal with the challenges of technological change, and cyber warfare?
The House of Lords International Relations Committee will take evidence from Shadow Secretary of State for Foreign and Commonwealth Affairs Emily Thornberry MP on Wednesday 24 October, as part of its inquiry UK Foreign Policy in Changed World Conditions.
The Committee's inquiry is examining the changing face of international relations and foreign policy, and to assess the UK's strategy and capability to adapt to these changes.
The Shadow Secretary of State for Foreign and Commonwealth Affairs will speak to the Committee at 10.40am on Wednesday 24 October. Questions are likely to include:
- In this rapidly changing world, including the rise of political uncertainty, populism, nationalism and isolationism, how would you reshape Labour's foreign policy to meet these challenges?
- How would you respond to the changing balance of power - in particular the growing role and power of China, and the changing approach of the US?
- How can the UK use its influence (including soft power, hard power and diplomacy) to maintain the rules-based international order?
- How well has the UK responded to the challenges wrought by technological change – particularly the increasing use of digital communications – and cyber warfare?
- How well is Whitehall structured and equipped to pursue the UK's international priorities post-Brexit?
The evidence session will take place in Committee Room 2.
