Facebook, Google and Microsoft to be quizzed by Lords on internet regulation
On Tuesday 30 October, representatives from three of the world's largest tech companies, Facebook, Google and Microsoft, will give evidence to the House of Lords Communications Committee for its inquiry on internet regulation.
These companies provide a variety of different online services and have taken large portions of different digital markets. The Committee will explore the responsibilities these companies have to their users, and whether internet companies should do more to protect social values and rights online.
The evidence session will begin at 3.30pm in Committee Room 2 of the House of Lords. The Committee will hear from:
- Rebecca Stimson, Head of Public Policy, Facebook UK
- Katie O'Donovan, Interim Head of Public Policy, Google UK
- Hugh Milward, Director of Corporate, Legal and External Affairs, Microsoft
Topics likely to be asked in the session include:
- The advantages and disadvantages of the current regulatory framework of the internet
- The risks for consumers and citizens associated with the concentration of digital markets within the hands of a few large tech companies
- The responsibilities of online service providers for moderating user-generated content
- The liability of online platforms for the content that they host.
