Lords to question DCMS Minister on internet regulation


The House of Lords Communications Committee will question Margot James MP, Minister for Digital and the Creative Industries at the Department for Digital, Culture, Media and Sport, on Monday 12 November as part of the Committee's inquiry into internet regulation.

Margot James MP is responsible for digital policy and online safety, including the Government's Digital Charter, a wide-ranging programme of work which aims “to make the internet work for everyone”. As part of the Charter, the Government is developing an Internet Safety Strategy to protect children and vulnerable adults.

The Minister will discuss a range of topics with the Committee, including:

  • The motivation for the Digital Charter and the Internet Safety Strategy, and the progress made so far on these programmes
  • Whether regulators and other bodies have adequate resources and capabilities to implement the law effectively online
  • The role and responsibility of online platforms in tackling online harms
  • The adequacy of competition law in the context of digital markets
  • How to design ethical internet technology.

The evidence session will begin at 3.30pm in Committee Room 3 of the House of Lords.
