Lords to quiz Ministry of Housing, Communities and Local Government officials on intergenerational fairness
The House of Lords Committee on Intergenerational Fairness will next week quiz senior officials at MHCLG on the impact of housing policy on different age groups and how the Government can promote fairness between generations in housing and community policy.
In the session, which will start at 11:40 on Tuesday 23 October in Committee Room 4A of the House of Lords, the Committee will hear evidence from:
- Isobel Stephen, Housing Supply Director, MHCLG
- Simon Gallagher, Planning Director, MHCLG
- Hardip Begol, Director, Integration and Communities, MHCLG
On Housing the Committee will ask the witnesses whether the Government supports financial products that allow parents to use equity in their own homes to provide a deposit for the children to obtain a mortgage, whether subsidies for first-time buyers is likely to be a long-term part of the Governments housing policy and what more local authorities could be doing to support the housing needs of older people.
The session will also cover the role of Communities in tackling age discrimination and loneliness as well as intergenerational imbalances affecting younger people – such as housing shortages, low pay, job insecurity and poor in-work progression.
