Chancellor of the Exchequer to face Economic Affairs Committee

On Tuesday 11 September 2018 the Rt Hon Philip Hammond MP, Chancellor of the Exchequer, will appear before the House of Lords Economic Affairs Committee in his annual session with the Committee.

The wide-ranging session is expected to cover questions on the Treasury's Brexit forecasts, the future of the Governor of the Bank of England, the Government's approach to student loan financing, and the economic case for HS2.

This public evidence session will start at 3.35pm. Other areas the Committee is likely to cover include:

  • The apprenticeship levy, and the decline in apprenticeship starts;
  • The use of the Retail Prices Index as a measure of inflation;
  • The dominance of the Big Four and challenges in the audit market;
  • Fiscal sustainability and demographic challenges; and
  • Social care funding.

Many of the issues expected to arise are based on the Committee's reports: Treating Students Fairly: The Economics of Post-School Education; Brexit and the Labour Market; The Economic of High Speed 2; and Auditors: Market Concentration and their role.

This evidence session will start at 3.35pm on Tuesday 11 September 2018 in Committee Room 1 of the House of Lords.
