Brexit: EU Justice Sub-Committee to question immigration minister on citizens' rights
How close is the Government to reaching a deal on citizens' rights? How have EU citizens in the UK responded to Brexit? Why have vulnerable EU citizens been told they may be deported, or that they should go home?
The House of Lords EU Justice Sub-Committee will question Immigration Minister Brandon Lewis MP on Tuesday 12 December as part of its inquiry on the question of citizens' rights after Brexit.
Brandon Lewis MP will speak to the Committee at 10.30am. Questions are likely to include:
- What is the current status of negotiations on citizens' rights, given that in October the Prime Minister said that we were within “touching distance” of a deal on those rights?
- Did the Government expect that we would still be discussing citizens' rights at this stage of the negotiations?
- What evidence does the Government have about how EU citizens in the UK have responded to the uncertainty of Brexit?
- Why was the original system for EU citizens already in the UK applying for permanent residence so complicated?
- Why have a number of vulnerable EU citizens received letters suggesting that they should return ‘home' or that they might be deported?
- What would be the legal impact of a ‘no deal' scenario on UK citizens in the EU and EU citizens in the UK?
The session will take place from 10.30am on Tuesday 12 December 2017 in Committee Room 3 of the House of Lords.
