Casey review one year on: Lords to ask Dame Louise Casey whether integration has improved
The House of Lords Committee on Citizenship and Civic Engagement will hold a one-off evidence session with Dame Louise Casey on Tuesday 5 December.
In 2015 Dame Louise Casey was asked by David Cameron to undertake a review considering what could be done to boost opportunity and integration in the UK's most isolated and deprived communities. Published in 2016, the report accused the government of serious failings which has caused worrying levels of segregation that were fuelling inequality and radicalisation.
To tackle this the report set a series of recommendations which included the promotion of the English language; that British values should be taught in school and secure women's emancipation in communities where they are being held back by regressive cultural practices.
One year on, the Committee will be able to ask Dame Louise Casey what progress she thinks has been made on bridging the divides between people and communities.
The evidence session will begin at 3pm on Tuesday 5 December in Committee Room 3 of the House of Lords. Questions she is likely to be asked include:
- What do you think is the current state of integration in the UK? Have there been any changes in the year since you published your review?
- What do you believe that civil society organisations need to do in order to foster integration?
- Could a greater emphasis on citizenship teaching in schools rather than an additional focus on Fundamental British Values be a better way to support integration?
- Do you think that the political context is now more willing to discuss sensitive issues in a manner in which it was previously not?
- The Government has not formally responded to your review but is due to publish an integration strategy at any moment. Do you know if it will take account of your recommendations? What do you hope it will say?
