Lords Economics Committee to take evidence on the state of further education

Why have universities become the focus of tertiary education? Will the graduate premium decline as the proportion of people with a degree increases? Will T levels raise the status of technical education?

These are some of the issues the House of Lords Economic Affairs Committee will be exploring with witnesses on Tuesday 5 December 2017.

At 3.35pm the Committee will hear from:

  • Baroness Wolf of Dulwich
  • The Rt Hon. the Lord Baker of Dorking
  • Professor Anna Vignoles, Professor of Education, Cambridge University.

Other questions the Committee is likely to ask include:

  • Is there enough respect for non-university tertiary education?
  • What should be the outcome of the Government's reviews of funding across tertiary education.
  • Is there an artificial divide between higher and further education?
  • Does the shortage of higher-level skills in the workforce mean that more university graduates are required? What impact will the new T-levels have?
  • Should the higher, further and technical education system be regionally focused and adapt to differences in local labour markets and skills?
  • How can the quality of careers advice in schools be improved?

This evidence session will start at 3.35pm on Tuesday 5 December 2017 in Committee Room 1 of the House of Lords.

This sessions are part of the Committee's ongoing inquiry into the economics of higher, further and technical education.

The Committee recently published the written evidence it has accepted into the inquiry. Click here and select ‘ View all' to read this evidence.
