Lords to debate Committee report calling for free trade agreement with EU

The House of Lords will next week debate the EU Internal Market Sub-Committee's report 'Brexit: trade in non-financial services' which was published earlier this year

The report considered the potential impact of Brexit on trade in five services sectors: professional business services, digital services, creative services, air services, and, tourism, education and health-related travel services.

The report concluded that a comprehensive Free Trade Agreement (FTA) with the EU is needed, and that in the absence of Single Market membership it will be much harder to provide for liberalised trade in services than trade in goods.

The Committee also stated that the Government has under-estimated the reliance of the services sector on the free movement of people, and called on the Government to ensure that it retains sufficient room for manoeuvre to negotiate on this issue.

The debate will start after 3pm on Monday 18 December in the House of Lords, it is the second debate scheduled for the day.

Chair of the Committee Lord Whitty will start the debate, and Lord Callanan will respond on behalf of the Government.

Other Members due to speak in the debate include:

Lord Aberdare, Lord Davies of Stamford, Baroness Donaghy, Baroness Fairhead, Lord German, Lord Green of Hurstpierpoint, Baroness Hayter of Kentish Town, Lord Inglewood, The Lord Bishop of Leeds, Lord Liddle, Baroness Noakes, Lord Purvis of Tweed, Baroness Randerson, and Lord Wei.
